In the late 1990’s, just as the wave of the dot com boom was about to crest, touring musician, Derek Sivers had a problem. He couldn’t sell his CDs online anywhere. In 1997, there was no iTunes Store. There was no PayPal. There was absolutely no way to sell your independent music online without a major label deal or major distribution. So what did Derek do? He decided to learn how to code and figured out how to create a shopping cart and take credit card orders for his CDs from his website. After some friends asked if he would help them sell their own independent CDs, Derek Sivers stumbled into an accidental business called CD Baby that would change the world and eCommerce forever. This is his rockstar story.

A Little Book That Carries a BIG Message
Anything You Want by Derek Sivers
If you’re looking for a quick, highly nutritious read, here’s a tiny but amazing little book by Derek Sivers about how to live the life you want to live and fill it with (you guessed it) anything you want. It’s jam packed with golden nuggets of wisdom that just might lead you down the path to your enlightenment. I can’t recommend it highly enough.
CD Baby’s Over the Top Customer Service
Long before there was a Zappos or an Amazon.com, Derek Sivers knew how to make his customers feel like a million bucks. As one of those early artists back in those halcion days of CD Baby, I never failed to crack a huge smile every time I got THIS confirmation email when my band sold another CD. You have to read this. It’s the part that starts with “Dear Ron…” You could learn an awful lot about how to do customer service right.
Derek’s Recommended Reading (from a guy who reads a whole lot of books)
Derek Sivers LOVES to read and is a wellspring of great book recommendations. In this interview he shares but a few gems of of the hundreds of books he reads annually. If Derek gives it a thumbs up you just might want to read it.
Thinking Fast and Slow by Daniel Kahneman
A Guide To The Good Life by William B. Irvine
What Got You Here Won’t Get You There by Marshall Goldsmith

Derek’s New Projects
Don’t have time to read 220 really important books that could help you immensely on your journey? That’s OK. Derek launched an exciting new project called “Just tell me what to do”: compressing knowledge into directives.” He decided to condense all the knowledge he gained from reading all 220 of those books down to industrial strength cliff notes and then distills them further into succinct directives that will tell you…Do this, then this, then this. That’s all you need to know. Now go do it!
Intrigued by the man now? Got a question you’d love to ask Derek. Go ahead and email him at: firstname.lastname@example.org. He responds to everyone. (Really, how do you think I got to know the guy?)
