All my heroes are dying…it sucks.
Joe Cocker passed away today and the world has lost another legend.
A one of a kind voice that will never be duplicated again. A true iconoclastic artist with no equal. His voice a gritty mixture of blues, soul and rock and roll, he turned the hit songs written by other artists into completely new works of art that might as well have been written by him for the unique and unforgettable voice he put to them, as only Joe Cocker could sing.
I am so fortunate to have been able to witness the man in action while he toured for a brief stint with Foreigner, through a European Summer tour back in 1985. Though I saw his show many times on that leg of the tour, you couldn’t help but just stand there on the side of the stage every night and marvel at the sheer force of his talent.
So too did most of the other famous artists who toured with us that summer like Huey Lewis, Sting and a bunch of others. They all stood stood there in awe watching a living legend, who was there at Woodstock making music history with his wrenching rendition The Beatles’ With A Little Help From My Friends and continued to make hits through the decades that followed.
If you’re too young to know him, do yourself a favor and go find Mad Dogs and Englishmen, his legendary live album back when he was on fire. Just put it on and behold the magic.
I hate to say goodbye, Joe.
We’ll miss you.
